Frequently asked questions

Shipping

Do you deliver?

Final delivery of your new surf ski is the responsibility of the new owner. Your new surf ski will be available for pick up from our factory. Should you need shipping to be arranged nationally or internationally we can assist with recommending our preferred suppliers for you to work with and arrange a suitable pick up and drop schedule. All costs incurred are the responsibility of the purchaser.

Do you ship internationally?

We build our surf ski's for paddlers all over the world. However, final delivery of your new surf ski is the responsibility of the customer. We are only too happy to assist with putting you in contact with our preferred shipping agents. All costs incurred are the responsibility of the purchaser.

Payment

When do I need to make payment for my surf ski?

About two weeks prior to your surf ski going into production we will send you an invoice for your ski. You will have up to two weeks notice to pay for your ski. Once payment has been received production will begin. Payment can be made by EFT, PayPal or credit card. AMEX is not accepted. Late payment may result in a delay in production of your ski.

Does the price of the surf ski's include tax?

All surf ski prices quoted on the website are exclusive of tax. GST will be added to the final invoice for all Australian orders only.

Measurements

How do I measure my leg length?

Every surf ski manufacturer has their own unique measuring system and are not universal across different brands of surf skis. The best and most accurate way to work out your size in a custom or fixed length BOS ski is to sit in a BOS measuring jig or another BOS ski for the correct length. Our measuring jigs are located throughout Australia and internationally. Contact us to find out where the nearest BOS jig is to your location. *Please note that seat depth will alter your actual jig measurement. This will be adjusted accordingly for each order submitted.

Surf ski models

What is the difference between the Raptor and the Tomahawk?

The Raptor was the first original model. Our aim was to create a dynamic design to not only be the fastest Surf Lifesaving Australia specification ski on the market, but also have unparalleled performance in and out of the surf break, through the choppy water and downwind. This was also the design platform for the later and more aggressive Enforcer model. Over five years of feedback from paddlers and our own testing we then set to work to design the latest model the Tomahawk. This ski, aimed at advanced paddlers has a more substantial bow line and a much fuller tail to allow it to punch through surf and heavy chop with even greater resistance to becoming 'airborne' or 'stalling' on the way in. The aggressive cockpit deflector keeps the water off your chest, and out of the seat and heel area very effectively. A greater curve through the fore section of the hull allows for a softer ride on cross chop and the increased 'rocker' improves surfing ability, handling in big surf and tight turning capability. A quick reference guide:

  • If stability and ease of paddling are your main requirements then the Raptor with a deeper cockpit setup may be best for you.
  • If performance is entirely your thing, then the Tomahawk is the latest and greatest. Talk to us about the cockpit set up on both models.

Seat options

What are the seat options available?

Adjustable seat position: Used in all adjustable skis, this seat comes in a deep mid width seat only to cater for as many paddlers as possible. Pads can be added to alter the seat height if required. This seat caters for paddlers between BOS sizes minus 3 to plus 7. Shallow Depth - Narrow/Wide: 140mm depth, 55mm above heels. Suits paddlers with no balance limitations who wish to sit as high as possible in the ski. The wide option is for those paddlers who are after more room at the hips. Mid Depth - Narrow/Wide: 150mm depth, 45mm above heels. The most common choice for advanced paddlers, still a strong, over catch seating position but also favouring extra stability in tricky conditions. The wide option is for those paddlers who are after more room at the hips. Extra Deep - Narrow/Wide: 160mm depth, 35mm above heels. For paddlers after maximum stability. The wide option is for those paddlers who are after more room at the hips.

Why are there so many seat options?

Paddler physiques and ability levels are infinite, we do not accept that it is okay to offer one cockpit set up or even just a shallow or deep option. We've designed our skis to cater for a wide paddler weight range but obviously everyone is going to float the ski differently. Every paddler is going to have different requirements regarding seat shape, width and depth depending on their physique and balance on the craft. To paddle effectively and to the best of your ability, you need comfort and stability. We currently offer seven different seat positions to help maximise not only these factors, but also allow the greatest leg drive and hip rotation through to your upper body as possible.

Construction

Which surf ski construction is best for me?

Standard Our Standard construction is what we would deem as 'fir for purpose' for Sur Lifesaving specification performance. The construction is a vinylester resin, vacuum bagged laminate featuring a kevlar eglass hull and eglass deck with kevlar and carbon reinforcement through the stress points. Being able to monitor hundreds of our products in use over a long period of time has allowed us to fine tune all construction methods and materials to bring you the most durable and reliable build possible that also feels best on the water. Pro The Pro build is the combination of carbon and kevlar hull and standard deck. This gives the ski added stiffness throughout and greater compression strength when experiencing heavy impact. This is a great build for those who like a slightly stiffer ski on the water, particularly heavier paddlers. Premium Our Premium build is a full carbon and kevlar construction, for those who wish to have the strongest and stiffest ski available. We can also offer a feature carbon or hybrid cloth through a clear gel coat finish if desired.

General

Which colours are best to use on my ski?

Anyone who has followed us on social media or walked the beach at a surf carnival will know we are not afraid to go all out with colour and design. However, Surf Lifesaving specification skis can have a hard life out in the elements and with general use, so common sense should prevail. A bright and intricate design may look great but can be problematic should the ski ever need repair. It will also usually incur additional cost on top of a standard build. Darker colours will tend to show scratches and scuffs for more visibly than lighter colours. We recommend our customers choose 2-3 lighter colours to make up their design and we are happy to help with your decisions. Surf Lifesaving requirements stipulate a contrast of colour at the nose and tail of the craft if the craft is not already of an approved colour. More details of this are available on the SLSA website or by contacting us directly. All of our skis come standard in a gel coat finish which is marine specific and more durable for surf use than an automotive paint finish as found on some other brands.

How do I submit my personalized ski design?

After you have submitted your order online. Use our design template to sketch your design. Add your Order Number to your completed design template and email your design to sales@bosoceansport.com Not feeling creative? What is the wait time for one of your surf ski's?

Well there is only one way to find that answer and that's to speak with us directly. Our wait times vary depending on the time of year. What you may have heard from others outside of BOS about our wait times is most likely incorrect, so don't be misled or put off. The best way to find out is to speak to us directly.
